Despite the City’s consistent efforts to keep the creek clean, over the years it had been used as an illegal dumping ground. The Corps, Fish & Game, the City, and the civil engineer worked together to create an asset for the project and for the neighborhood.
The approach to the restoration and improvements to the creek required re-routing the water flow to make the creek bed available for work without impacting downstream water quality. A temporary dam was constructed on the upstream end of the property, and the collected water was pumped and piped along the site perimeter, and then back into the creek below the property. Now the civil and landscaping trades were able to move onto the site.
The creek was cleaned, graded, and completely lined with armorflex, a flexible and porous concrete mat held together with steel cables. A compacted layer of soil was placed over the armorflex, and openings were cut in the lining as necessary to create pockets for the rooting of a variety of appropriate plants.
