As the first apartment complex of any kind in the state to use 100% photovoltaic systems for providing energy, the 56 units at SOLARA are understandably getting a lot of attention from all over the country.
"Green" development is sometimes portrayed as a boutique luxury and an amenity available only to the affluent. Residents of SOLARA, however, have become working class ambassadors of the "green" movement.
SOLARA consists of 56 units of family apartments developed by Community HousingWorks - a nationally recognized leader for this development's groundbreaking use of solar and the integration of green elements.
Always trying to be good neighbors, Community HousingWorks and its consultants designed several “green” measures into the project, including:
An extensive photovoltaic system designed to provide all or most of the electrical power required for the project
High-efficiency, tankless hot water heaters
Recycled rubber playground surfacing
Formaldehyde-free countertop substrates
Various recycled construction materials
SOLARA utilizes a "360 degree green design", which incorporates:
Solar (renewable energy) is only part of the story (“green” elements of design and management)
Energy – highly efficient building envelope, all florescent lighting, tankless waterheaters for heating and hot water, exceeds Energy Star and California’s Title 24
Water – dual flush toilets, native plants, no “mown” lawn Indoor Air Quality – low VOC paint/carpet, linoleum, formaldehyde free elements, ventilation
Recycled materials
Smart growth—infill, walking to services/shopping, major arterial
Operate/maintain to preserve “green”
Cooperating in this project are the City of Poway and California Energy Commission.
Prior to becoming moving in all residents had to go through an orientation and agree to follow certain “green” guidelines. Since opening in April 2007 SOLARA has also become a Crime Free community.
In order to do so the property had to pass a physical inspection by the Poway Police, property management attended a training course, and the community participated in a Safety Social.
